From My Heart To Yours
How Much Is Enough?
By Jackie Evans
As a confessed "chocoholic", I have never gotten to the point where I have had enough chocolate. I also love ice cream, Ben and Jerry's in particular although I have yet to narrow down my favorite flavor. I also never get enough of café mochas from Starbucks or yogurt almonds from The Grove in the Atlanta airport.
Jerry and I usually make trips together but on one trip recently, he had to fly out a day earlier than I for a meeting and I was to join him the next day. By the time I arrived in Atlanta to change planes, not having eaten all day, I began to eat my way through Concourse A. I began with a large cup of Ben and Jerry's and was in the process of purchasing two bags of yogurt almonds (I've learned to get one bag for Jerry otherwise, he will eat mine) when a gentleman noticed I was balancing ice cream while attempting to pay for the almonds and commented on the amount of food I was consuming. I agreed with him and told him my next stop was about five gates further at Starbucks where I was adding a Mocha to my "meal".
All of this is great to a point but it started me thinking about my relationship with Jesus and how much more my addiction should be to Him than things that are temporary...such as food.
I've been going through a Bible Study by Beth Moore of First Baptist Church in Houston TX, leading up to and the building of the Old Testament tabernacle. Early in the study, the focus is on God teaching total dependence on Him as His children wandered in the wilderness. He provided manna for them daily, but only enough for one day. God was trying to teach them to have enough faith in Him to trust that He would be their provider. That they didn't have to worry about tomorrow, just focus on today.
This is the same with God and the mercies he provides for us. Right now you may be going through a trauma in your life. Let me encourage you and remind you that God has His mercy from which you are free to draw. Just as he provided enough manna for one day, so it is with his mercy; it is always given in perfect supply for the need, and then we have tomorrow bringing a brand new perfect supply, which is enough for that day. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us that..."His mercies never fail. They are new each morning: Great is God's faithfulness!"
A testimony during one of the premiers at conference last month was given by a couple who lost their daughter at the age of five. During softball practice, where the dad was coaching, the little girl got away from the family and was run over by a van in the parking lot of the ball field and was killed. The glory of the Lord shone on the faces of this couple relating the story of their precious child...a glory that only can come from our Father. I'm sure it took a lot of drawing strength from God, on a daily basis, to get to the place in their life where they could give this testimony.
God tells us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that His grace is sufficient for us...His strength is made perfect in our weakness. I remember a song made famous by Andre Crouch entitled "Through It All". It says, in part, "If I never had a problem, I'd never know that God could solve them" and "Through it all, I've learned to trust in Jesus, I've learned to trust in God...I've learned to depend upon His word." We will never come to a place in our lives where we have more than enough of God. But we will have enough of His mercy to get us through each day, no matter what situations we face. We will never face anything without enough of God's mercy to see us through.
Love Ya!
